Project Update April 1, 2024

Beach nourishment is now taking place to protect the seawall on North Scituate Beach and improve the resiliency of the shoreline. About 35% of the project has been completed. A new informational brochure that explains why the project is being done and how it will improve the shoreline is now available here!

Project Update - March 5, 2024

After years of planning, permitting, engineering, and fundraising, the first load of sand was finally placed on the beach this morning!  The crew worked from two locations along the beach to establish a stable sand platform for their equipment to work from.  The sand platform is up high enough so that it won't be affected by the mean high tide.  In the coming days, the crew will begin to build the berm that will eventually cause the waves to break further out.  This will reduce the energy of the waves and help to protect the seawall from damage.

Project Update - February 27, 2024

A comprehensive initiative is starting to enhance North Scituate Beach, primarily focusing on improving accessibility during high tide, mitigating flood risks, and enhancing the beach's ability to dissipate waves and reduce seawall overtopping during coastal storms. This beach nourishment project is made possible through grant funding from the Massachusetts Coastal Zone Management Program, highlighting the collaborative effort between the community and the Massachusetts Office of Coastal Zone Management to address Scituate's coastal challenges. The contractor will kickstart the process by staging equipment at the intersection of Gannett Road and Glades Road later this week. The strategic placement of equipment marks the beginning of efforts to enhance and improve North Scituate Beach for residents.

The material to be placed on North Scituate Beach in the upcoming weeks will be brought to Town from different sources. A sample of this material is available for viewing at the Scituate Library. The material will be mixed off Union Street and delivered to North Scituate Beach to be spread. The material will arrive in Town on Wednesday, February 28, 2024, and be placed on North Scituate Beach starting on Monday, March 4, 2024. The project hours will be from 7 AM to 5 PM and is expected to last 8-10 weeks. Glades Road will be placed into the one-way operation during the project period. The material will be brought to North Scituate Beach by tractor-trailer and spread with heavy equipment. We urge residents to avoid the area during work hours to allow the trucks to safely access and egress the site. Roadways will be open to local traffic only. The Town of Scituate, along with our contractors and the Scituate Police, will enforce traffic control measures for the project's duration.

The Scituate Department of Public Works and our Coastal Management Officer appreciate your patience as we strive to make a resilient Scituate. For any inquiries, please contact Corey Miles at cmiles@scituatema.gov or Sean McCarthy at smccarthy@scituatema.gov

The Town of Scituate was awarded nearly $4,000,000 in grant funding from the Massachusetts Coastal Zone Management Program (CZM) to construct a beach nourishment project at the North Scituate beach.  The grant funding will be used to place sand on the beach to reduce the impact of waves on the seawall and help to mitigate flooding in that area.  The sediment will be trucked in from a sandpit to the ramp at the corner of Glades and Gannett Rd. and dumped on the beach.  Heavy equipment will be used to spread the material to the engineered template. Construction is expected to begin in February and end in the Spring of 2024.  The available funding will allow about 20% of the full project to be completed this year.  Additional grant funding will be sought in future years to continue the project.

The Town is currently conducting an engineering investigation to design a beach nourishment project for the North Scituate Beach near the Gannett Rd./Glades Rd. access ramp.  The project involves delivering, mixing, and placing mixed-sediment (combination of mostly sand and a little rounded gravel) nourishment material on the beach to an elevation that will reduce the impact of waves on the seawall and mitigate flood risk in that area.
