Scituate is a coastal community that is vulnerable to flooding from high tides, storm surge, large waves, and heavy precipitation. Nor'easters cause most of the flood hazard in Scituate. Nor'easters can occur any time of year, but are most common in the winter months.

FEMA Flood Maps

Find out your flood risk by checking the flood maps.  The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is responsible for mapping flood hazards and flood risk.  The FEMA Flood Map Service Center (MSC) is the official public source for flood hazard information produced in support of the NFIP.  The official flood map is called a Flood Insurance Rate Map (FIRM). Flood maps show how likely it is for an area to flood. Any place with a 1% chance or higher chance of experiencing a flood each year is considered to have a high risk. Those areas have at least a one-in-four chance of flooding during a 30-year mortgage. Use the MSC to find your official flood map, access a range of other flood hazard products, and take advantage of tools for better understanding flood risk.

National Flood Insurance Program

The National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) is administered by FEMA, while insurance policies are sold and serviced by a network of more than 50 insurance companies and the NFIP Direct. Homeowner's insurance typically doesn't cover damages from a flood so a separate policy for flood can be obtained from the NFIP to pay for damage to the structure and/or contents of your home.
