Community Campus Project for Senior Center and Recreation Facilities

The building of a new community Senior Center and campus site along with upgrades to the Recreation Veteran’s Memorial Gymnasium has been approved at Special Town Meeting and at the town election as a debt exclusion for the $12.2M budgeted cost of the project.

The building of a 15,640 sq. ft. Senior Center, including a Veterans agent office area, on the site of the C-wing of the old Gates School is projected to cost approximately $8.1M.  Additional costs are attributed to site abatement and demolition, upgrades to the gymnasium, and soft costs including fees for professional services, building/site fixtures and furnishings, and contingencies.  The upgrades to the gymnasium include an elevator for ADA accessibility, restrooms on the second floor, and roof repair or replacement.  Site improvements include a 70-space parking area adjacent to the Senior Center as well as a 21-space lot in front of the gymnasium and Recreation offices.  The existing parking spaces behind the former Gates school will also remain available for use.  The Recreation Department will continue to occupy areas of the A-wing and the gymnasium for their offices and programs. Both the A- and B-wings of the school will remain until a decision is made as to the future of the building by the Board of Selectmen.

Please see attached Project Design Documents for illustrations of the proposed site and the new building for Senior Center and community use.  Documents will be added as available.  The Planning Board and Scenic Roads Public Hearing is scheduled for Thursday, June 27 at 7:00 pm.
