Geographic Response Plan Scituate Harbor – Thursday, April 25, 2024

MassDEP, U.S. Coast Guard, Scituate & Cohasset Fire Departments, Harbormaster offices, and Police Departments are teaming up for a Geographic Response Plan oil spill response exercise. A containment boom will be deployed in the water for the exercise.

  • Location: Scituate Harbor, near Jericho Boat Launch
  • Date and Time: Thursday, April 25, 2024, from 12 PM to 2 PM
  • Vessels and vehicles from Scituate and Cohasset Fire Departments, Harbormasters, Police Departments, and the U.S. Coast Guard will be actively involved.
  • Mariners passing through the area are advised to exercise caution.

The Marine Oil Spill Prevention and Response Act (MOSPRA) Program was created by the legislature in response to the catastrophic 98,000-gallon oil spill from a damaged barge that hit a rocky shoal at the entrance to Buzzards Bay in April 2003. One of the key activities of the MOSPRA Program is to conduct training with local emergency responders on Geographic Response Plans (GRS) – plans developed explicitly for each M.A. coastal community to protect vulnerable environmental resources and infrastructure from potential oil spill impacts. Funding for these exercises comes from the MOSPRA Trust, dedicated to marine oil spill prevention and response preparedness. This training event will be the 100th exercise since the MOSPRA Program was established in 2004.
