Maritime Industries

  • Maritime industries in Scituate include a range of enterprises such as commercial fishing, aquaculture, boat repair and storage, recreational boating, and scientific research and exploration.
  • The fishing industry is part of Scituate’s identity and continues to contribute to the local economy, both directly (it supports over 100 families), and indirectly (suppliers, repair services, etc.) It is, however, smaller than in years past and facing dwindling stocks and increasing regulatory constraints.
  • The Town recently utilized $618,000 in grant funding from the Seaport Advisory Council to rehabilitate the Town Pier, the primary location for fishing boats to tie up, fuel and resupply.
  • Support for the fishing industry should continue, and increased marketing and other support efforts are recommended. • Potential maritime growth opportunities focus on recreation, research and tourism. Specifically, there is potential for private boat rental opportunities and boat tours.
  • There are opportunities for revenue growth by increasing dock and mooring fees. Presently there are 650 moorings, 250 slips, and a 5-7 year waiting list. Increased fees could be supported.
  • Expanding scientific marine research and programs at NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration), and exploring opportunities for maritime trade education also hold promise.
