Closure of Town Parks, Fields and Playgrounds

As updates from both State and Federal officials are directing everyone to limit their contact with others to combat the spread of COVID-19, effective immediately Scituate has taken the following step:

All Town Playgrounds have been closed - All Town outdoor basketball courts have been closed – The Skate Park and outdoor rink at the High School has been closed. The Stadium Field at the High School has been closed. Central Park, Old Gates and Little League complexes at Greenbush, Roach Field and Cudworth have been closed. The playground in North Scituate has been closed. The Dog Park is closed. All other Town parks and playgrounds are closed. Conservation lands will remain open. Residents should maintain proper social distancing.

The natural impulse to come together after a blizzard, during a school closure, and after a major storm is exactly the opposite of what needs to happen to control the spread of COVD-19.  While it’s everyone’s natural reaction to see friends, visit neighbors, and get together to talk, close personal contact spreads COVID-19. With the weather warming, we know that the children and teens in Scituate will gravitate to our parks, fields and playgrounds to meet friends, exercise and practice. We are at a critical period in the fight versus COVID-19 and social distancing is crucial to winning that fight. In addition, it is still uncertain how long COVID-19 remains active on various surfaces. The Town does not have the ability to clean playground equipment at our various parks and this becomes a potential source of transmission. With everyone’s help and cooperation, we will get through this.
