Tropical Storm Henri Advisory

SCITUATE EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT AGENCY

Tropical Storm Henri Advisory

Good morning,

Tropical Storm Henri is still forecast to impact us on Sunday through Monday. The storm track has moved west showing the eye of the storm coming through Narraganset Bay. This could move west towards Connecticut or east over the Cape.

We still anticipate significant impacts from this storm as it is expected to make landfall as a category 1 hurricane, steady winds exceeding 74 mph near the center of the storm. The storm timeline has moved up for first impacts to be early Sunday morning.

We are under a coastal flood watch for all of Cape Cod Bay and we are concerned with the noon time & midnight tides Sunday, Sunday night, & Monday. As of now moderate to major flooding is forecast due to the strong long duration easterly winds and the astronomical high tides.

The location of landfall will determine the wind direction for our area. The current forecast has the winds initially from the northeast veering to the east then south east. The strongest winds are expected from noon Sunday through midnight.

Homes along the coastline should start preparations to protect your home. Boarding up windows and have a plan in case evacuations are necessary. Make sure all outside furniture & grills are secure so they do not become airborne and cause additional damage. Be prepared to move your vehicles away from the flood prone areas. Those who have boats in the harbor may want to consider hauling out or at a minimum add extra dock lines and fenders.

Power outages are likely and could last for days. Check your generators, have fresh gasoline, and always keep generators away from windows and doors to reduce any chance of carbon monoxide poisoning. Carbon monoxide poisoning has become one of the leading causes of death during long duration power outages that often occur with major storms.

It may be wise to book a hotel now before they get booked up, you can always cancel if not needed.  Please see the below Scituate  Storm Prep guide which has local hotel info as well as many helpful recommendations for your family’s safety. Please take the time to review this guide.

We ask that you stay informed and be prepared for a significant impacts from this anticipated Cat 1 hurricane. Start planning now as this storm does continue towards our coastline during its local transit early Sunday morning into Monday. We will be monitoring the track of the hurricane and will advise you of any additional information. Please take this advisory seriously it could help keep your family safe.

Be prepared and Stay Safe!
