Transfer Station News Update 20200401

Please be aware that the transfer station is open regular hours. The transfer station will have a grace period of two weeks for expired stickers. If your sticker has lapsed please allow additional time to have your sticker processed. The treasurer’s office is working hard to process all sticker requests in a timely manner.

As patrons of the transfer station, the DPW ask that people take care to remove gas and oil from any engines that are being recycled. Last Friday (3.27.20) someone disposed of a lawn mower with gas in the tank. As the crew was placing additional metal in the bin the gas ignited causing a significant fire. No one was hurt but there was damage to equipment. The Scituate Fire Department responded quickly and was able to put out the fire using 1,000 gallons of water and foam.  This is dangerous and could have injured someone. If you have questions about how to dispose of something please ask the gate attendant for help. The positive news about this incident is that no brown water calls were received by the water department with the opening of the hydrant.

If you have any questions or concerns about disposal of materials the transfer station can be reached at 781.545.8729 and any sticker related questions can be answered at 781.545.8718.
