Hurricane Lee Advisory #2

SCITUATE EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT AGENCY

Hurricane Lee Advisory #2

Good Afternoon,

This is the second of our daily Hurricane Lee advisories, as the storm is expected to move up the coast and pass along the coast late Friday and early Saturday.

The National Weather service has issued a Tropical Storm Warning for Eastern Plymouth County, including Scituate. This means tropical storm-force winds are expected in this area within the next 36 hours.

We anticipate impacts from this storm as it will be either a strong tropical storm or a Hurricane, when it passes to the East. This is a large storm and will have impacts far beyond the track that the center of the storm will take. We expect that we will see Tropical Storm force winds with wind gusts as high as 64 mph. These impacts will be dependent on the ultimate track of Hurricane Lee which is unclear at this point.

Rainfall is projected to be in the area of 1” or more for this storm. Rain will start in the overnight hours and continue until Saturday afternoon. The combination of wind and rain, with the ground already sodden from the rainfall this week will potentially cause issues with downed trees and limbs. Scattered power outages are likely. If you see wires down do not assume that they are dead and attempt to move them yourselves. Call 911 and report the downed wires to Emergency Communications.

Check your generators, have fresh gasoline, and always keep generators away from windows and doors to reduce any chance of carbon monoxide poisoning. Carbon monoxide poisoning has become one of the leading causes of death during long duration power outages that often occur with major storms.

Coastal residents should prepare for minor to moderate flooding in the event the path of Lee shifts closer to the coastline. Cole Parkway, Edward Foster Road, Oceanside Drive, Cedar Point and Humarock should expect impacts on either side of the overnight and afternoon high tides; High tides on Saturday are 12:39 a.m. and 12:56 p.m.

Homes along the coastline should start preparations to protect your home. Board up windows to prevent against flying debris and make sure all outside furniture and grills are secure so that they do not become airborne and cause additional damage. Have a plan in case evacuations are necessary. Be prepared to move your vehicles away from the flood prone areas. Those who have boats in the harbor may want to consider hauling out or at a minimum add extra dock lines and fenders.

Beachgoers are advised to stay away from the surf which could include dangerous rip currents.

We ask that you stay informed and be prepared for impacts from this anticipated storm. Start planning now as this storm does continue towards our coastline during its local transit late Friday into Saturday. We will be monitoring the track of the hurricane and will advise you of any additional information. Please take this advisory seriously, it could help keep your family safe.
