Hurricane Dorian Advisory 2

Scituate Emergency Management Agency

Not much has changed with our coastal expectations since our first advisory on Wednesday as Hurricane Dorian transits northeast off the Cape Hatteras. The forecast is for the hurricane to travel approximately 140 miles southeast of Nantucket with its closest approach early Saturday morning. This system is expected to remain a category 1 hurricane with maximum winds in excess of 90mph.

If this track is accurate we would likely experience impacts similar to a moderate nor’easter. These impacts would include steady northeast winds 25- 30mph with higher gusts in the 40’s, rough surf, rip tides, minor beach erosion, and bands of periodic rain (1”-2” potential).

There may be some storm surge but we do not expect any widespread flooding, some splash over is likely. The only impact tide for Scituate would be the Saturday morning at 6:32am, a 9’ high tide which will minimize our coastal flood impact.

Again if this storm shifts more southeast these impacts would be reduced but if the hurricane shifts west closer to us these impacts would increase depending on how close it passes by.

We ask that you stay informed and be prepared for the potential of a closer approach as this is still a possibility, a westerly shift of just 50 miles would expand the tropical storm winds to our area. All homes along our coastline should secure all outside furniture and grills as wind gusts in the 40’s could send these objects airborne doing damage to your home or your neighbor’s home. We will be monitoring the track of the hurricane and will advise you if the storm track changes.

Be prepared and Stay Safe!
