Hurricane Dorian Advisory

Scituate Emergency Management Agency

As Hurricane Dorian transits north off the Florida, Georgia, & the Carolina’s in the next two days, the forecast is for the hurricane to travel northeast early Friday morning into Saturday morning. This system is expected to remain a category 1 hurricane with maximum winds in excess of 85mph as it passes southeast of New England.

The current track of the hurricane brings it approximately 150 miles off the coast of Nantucket early Saturday morning. If this track is accurate we would likely experience impacts similar to a nominal Nor’easter. These impacts would include northeast winds less than 30mph with rough surf, rip tides, minor beach erosion, and bands of periodic rain.

There may be some storm surge but we wouldn’t expect any widespread flooding. The only impact tide would be the Saturday morning at 6:32am, a 9’ high tide which will help to minimize any coastal flood impact.

If this storm shifts more southeast these impacts would be reduced but if the hurricane shifts northwest closer to us these impacts would increase. A closer approach would obviously increase all of these impacts to more of a significant Nor’easter.

We ask that you stay informed and be prepared for a closer approach as this is a realistic possibility. Start planning now in case this storm does shift northwest towards our coastline during its local transit Friday night into Saturday morning. We will be monitoring the track of the hurricane and will advise you if the storm track changes in the coming days.

Be prepared and Stay Safe!
