HAZARDOUS WEATHER ALERT – 4/2/2024 – 2 PM

The National Weather Service has issued a hazardous weather alert for the Town of Scituate. Heavy rainfall, potentially reaching up to 3 inches, is expected starting Tuesday, April 2, 2024, evening through Thursday, April 4, 2024. This complex spring storm will impact the region over the next few days with rain, coastal flooding, and strong winds.

The strongest winds are forecasted to occur from mid-day Wednesday, April 3, 2024, through mid-day Thursday, April 4, 2024, with wind gusts ranging up to 50 mph during this period. Additionally, high tides may cause splashovers on coastal roads and the possibility of coastal flooding. Areas prone to flooding, including Cole Parkway, Front Street, Edward Foster Road, Cedar Point, and Central Ave in Humarock, may be particularly vulnerable.

Given the ground's saturation from previous rainfall, the risk of flooding is heightened, especially in basements, areas with poor drainage, and low-lying regions. Residents are advised to remain vigilant of large puddles, potholes, and flooded roads.

The strong winds also pose a risk of falling tree limbs and downed trees, potentially leading to power disruptions. Power outages should be reported to National Grid at 1-800-465-1212 or Eversource (Humarock) at 1-800-688-6160.

The Town of Scituate urges residents to take precautions:

  • Avoid driving through flooded areas to prevent vehicle damage and risks to neighboring properties.
  • Refrain from parking on Cole Parkway and the Town Pier.
  • Respect the sawhorses placed for safety purposes and avoid driving around them.
  • Ensure sump pumps are operational and downspouts are clear of any obstructions.
  • Report any blocked catch basins to the Department of Public Works during business hours or the Scituate Police after hours.

In case of emergencies, dial 911 or 781-545-1212 for non-emergencies.
