Emergency Management Team Coastal Storm Advisory #2

The coastal storm continues to impact our area with tree and power issues. According to National Grid and Eversource the entire Town is without power. The utility companies categorize the event as a type 3 event with restoration of power taking up to 72 hours after the end of storm. Due to the wide spread damage of this storm todays primary goal is to clear wires, trees and make all roads safe for emergency access and for public passage to follow. We would expect the primary feeder power to be restored early tomorrow with residential power to follow into Saturday. Please remember to stay away from downed wires.

Downed wires should be reported to Scituate Police or Fire.

Scituate experienced some of the strongest winds we have seen in years with this storm. We had wind gusts officially to 87 mph and to 93 mph from one of our experienced weather watchers. Along with the tree damage we had eight boats break from their moorings, four of these boats over 40’ long. We anticipate many homes along the coastline had damage from the constant wave action.

As mentioned earlier we were fortunate to have astronomically low tides during this storm. Even with these low (high) tides we received widespread minor coastal flooding this morning. We do anticipate minor to moderate coastal flooding during the 4:30pm high tide this afternoon. As expected with a storm of this duration the tides did not recede much which will likely increase the tide height this afternoon, increasing the flood potential

For those who have generators please make sure you stage them away from doors, windows, or attached garages. Recent research reveals that more people die from carbon monoxide poisoning than from flooding. To further protect your family, make sure your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are in working order. We appreciate your patience during this long-duration storm and ask you to make every effort to stay off of the roads so public safety and utility crews can rapidly return our community to a safe state.

Please be prepared and stay safe!
