Coastal Storm Advisory

Scituate Emergency Management Team

Eastern Mass is under a winter storm advisory and forecast to be impacted by a nor’easter starting early Monday afternoon lasting into Tuesday evening. The storm will bring a snow/rain mix, high winds, coastal flooding, and the potential for scattered power outages.

Snow is anticipated to begin early Monday afternoon, transition to a mix then to mostly rain overnight. The coastal area of Town will likely end up with little accumulation of snow with the west end having the potential for 2-4”. Driving should be challenging Monday afternoon into Tuesday morning due to the snow, heavy rain, and high winds. Please try to stay off the roads so our DPW personnel can keep the roads cleared.

The northeast winds are forecast to be steady 25-35mph with gusts potentially exceeding 50mph. The peak winds are expected to occur overnight, approximately 7pm to 7am. The high winds could create scattered power outages, often occurring when wind gusts exceed 50mph. Obviously snow accumulation on trees and power lines will be a factor for power outages. Fortunately, we are forecast to receive more rain than snow, but we are concerned with snow accumulation in towns west of us where our power feeder lines transit from.

We anticipate widespread minor coastal flooding during the high tides at our 2am high tide (10.1’) and 2:30pm high tide (10.3’) Tuesday. There is the potential for moderate coastal flooding, this will depend on the timing and the height of the storm surge we receive. The forecast is for 1.5’ to 2.5’ with a low risk of a 3’ surge.

Today would be a good day to prepare for this pending storm. Please check your generators and move your vehicles to higher ground if you reside in the flood prone neighborhoods.

Please be prepared and stay safe!
