Coastal Storm Advisory

A long duration coastal storm is expected to impact our area starting this evening lasting into Saturday morning. We are forecast to experience significant rain, wind, & high surf: 1” to 1.5” of rain could fall in our area.

We are under a high wind advisory that is forecast to bring northeast winds of a steady 25-35 mph, with gusts that could exceed 50mph. Winds are expected to be strongest from midnight tonight through midnight Friday night, slowly diminishing into Saturday morning. The gusty winds could bring branches and small limbs down creating the potential for isolated power outages.

The surf has started to build and waves will continue to increase overnight up to 15’ nearshore by Friday morning. Cape Cod Bay communities are under a coastal flood advisory and we have the potential to receive minor coastal flooding for three consecutive high tides. The most concerning time right now is the Friday morning high tide at 7:21am (9.8’) due to the high surf and the potential of a 2.5’ storm surge. We will likely experience minor with the potential for moderate coastal flooding at this time. Splash over to minor flooding is likely during the 8:06pm high tide (8.9’) Friday night and the Saturday morning high tide at 8:23am (10.2’).

Please make sure you secure any loose items on your deck and move your vehicles if parked in an area that typically floods. We do have some luck on our side. This storm comes just before a week of astronomical high tides starting this Sunday. Expect minor flooding in our low lying coastal areas during next week starting Monday around 10am & 10:30pm advancing about 45 minutes each day.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their patience & determination with social distancing & good hygiene during this extremely difficult time. The CDC anticipates the next 2-3 weeks becoming the peak exposure period of this pandemic. Please continue to follow these recommendations and together we will get through this historic challenge.

Stay Safe!
