Coastal Storm Advisory

A Message from Scituate Emergency Management Agency

A second coastal storm in less than a week is forecast to impact our area starting tonight (Wednesday) after 8pm. This is going to be a short duration storm bringing strong east/southeast winds, heavy rain, and the potential for minor coastal flooding at the 2am high tide (9.5’). The major part of this storm impacts us overnight followed by a very windy Thursday with breezy conditions lasting into Friday afternoon.

The winds are expected to be steady southeast 35-40mph with gusts 45-55mph for the overnight hours (10pm-6am). Winds will shift from the west (25-30mph) around sunrise and continue to be strong through Thursday into Friday. Most of the leaves survived last week’s storm increasing the likelihood of tree and limb damage which will likely cause scattered power outages. Expect more leaves to fall, please be aware as the leaves could cover up downed power lines. If you see downed power lines please call the Fire Dept. (911), National Grid for any power issues at 800-465-1212, and Eversource in Humarock at 800-286-2000.

The strong southeast winds will stir up our coastal waters bringing nearshore waves to 8-10’ in height which will may bring splash over and the potential for minor coastal flooding in some of our low lying areas for the 2am high tide.

We again luck out with the lower astronomical high tides during a local coastal storm.

We are forecast to receive 1-2” of rain before this storm exits sometime early Thursday morning with occasional showers possible throughout the day. Heavy rains could create some localized street flooding, please do not drive through any flooded roads.

Please secure all outside furniture and grills as these could become projectiles damaging your home as well as your neighbors. We ask that you stay informed and be prepared for this short duration storm followed by strong west winds.

Be prepared and Stay Safe!
