The Scituate Police Department seeks a highly motivated, proactive and community-oriented police officer for lateral transfer to our Non-Civil Service Department.  To be considered, applicants must:

  • Be eligible for transfer from their current department. 
  • Have successfully completed an MPTC full-time academy and be POST certified.
  • Can successfully complete a comprehensive background investigation, including medical and psychological examination.
  • Possess a valid Massachusetts motor vehicle operator’s license.
  • Possess a valid Massachusetts license to carry firearms.
  • Currently reside or be willing to relocate within 15 miles of the Town of Scituate within 6 months of appointment.
  • Demonstrate solid problem-solving abilities and have strong verbal and written skills.  

The Town of Scituate is a seacoast community located in Southeastern Massachusetts midway between Boston and Plymouth.  Scituate encompasses 31.8 square miles with a beautiful coastline and vibrant harbor/waterfront district.  Scituate has five public beaches and two commuter rail stations.  The town’s population is just under 20k, with a seasonal population which swells to 30k+.  

The Scituate Police Department is authorized for 38 sworn officers and hosts a combined Public Safety Emergency Communication Center in our recently completed Public Safety Building (2017).  

The Scituate Police Department offers a variety of specialty opportunities including Detectives, K9, Mountain Bikes, Traffic, SRO, Marine Unit and METRO-LEC units.  The department organizational structure includes Chief, Deputy Chief, Lieutenants (2) and Sergeants (7).

The FY24 base salary for police officers ranges from $58,165 to 77,946.  Quinn Bill equivalent education incentive is also available to eligible applicants.  A new contract has been negotiated for FY24-FY26.

Lateral officers may receive credit for time served.  Education, experience, and years of service will determine starting salary and vacation time. 

Other benefits include educational incentives, night shift differential, clothing allowance and extra pay for specialty positions.
