Confirmed Bear Sighting in Scituate

Bear in Scituate

The Scituate Police Department confirmed reports of a bear in Town today. Initial sightings were reported in the Old Oaken Bucket/Tack Factory Pond area and moved East of Route 3A to the Deer Common Lane - Williamsburg Lane area. Most recently, the bear was confirmed to be on Elm Street and was last seen continuing East. Residents are urged to remain away from the bear and leave it alone. Useful tips on preventing bears from habituating on your property can be found on the mass.gov website at the following links:

In summary, residents should stay away from the bear and take the following measures.

  • Remove any bird feeders
  • Secure any loose outdoor trash
  • Remove attractants (clean greasy barbecue grills)
  • Protect bees, chickens and ducks
  • Keep pets on a leash

A bear’s first response to something unusual is to leave. If a bear is feeding in an area where it doesn’t belong, such as your yard, on a porch, or in a dumpster, step outside, yell, and make lots of noise. The bear will usually leave.

Additional information and updates will be made available on the Town website and social media sites as the situation unfolds.

The Scituate Police Department and the Massachusetts Environmental Police are in the area and monitoring the situation.
