SSO Notices

In January 2021, Governor Baker signed An Act Promoting Awareness of Sewage in Public Waters into
law. This new law will make sure the public knows when untreated sewage flows into Massachusetts
waters. This includes releases known as combined sewer overflows (CSOs) and certain Sanitary Sewer
Overflows (SSOs). MassDEP recognizes the importance of notifying the public when untreated sewage is
released into our waters and has developed regulations to implement this law (314 CMR 16.00:
Notification Requirements to Promote Public Awareness of Sewage Pollution).

When a discharge or overflow occurs, The Town of Scituate Sewer Division sends out a public advisory notification.  On business days, this website will be updated within 2 hours of the notification.  During weekends or holidays, this website will be updated on the next business day. 

You can also see a list of discharge and overflow events on the MassDEP website: https://eeaonline.eea.state.ma.us/portal/dep/cso-data-portal/  This list is updated within 24 hours of when the public advisory notification is sent.  Enter [PERMITTEE NAME] in the Permittee field and click “Search”.  [URL]

Please be aware: During periods of excessive rainfall or coastal flooding, The Town of Scituate's Sewer system can become over taxed. Please be cautious if opening any inspection ports or clean outs during these events. Opening covers or ports may result in surcharged waters backflowing into areas. If you are experiencing issues with your sewer service please report it to the Sewer Division at 781-545-8736 or by emailing us at tosSewer@scituatema.gov . Please always be sure to work with licensed and insured professionals when servicing your plumbing. Depending on the severity of the event, Sewer service may take 24-72 hours to return to normal.
