Town of Scituate

Storm Advisory #6, January 28, 11:00 a.m.

The Town remains in a State of Emergency. With the end of the storm we are now in recovery. Our primary goal is to restore power to as many homes as possible. Before that happens a visual inspection is required by an electrical inspector working with National Grid or N ’Star. We have already deployed deputized inspectional  teams and have divided the Town into six sections. Structural damage to homes is also being checked. If your electrical box was impacted by sea water you cannot have your power turned back on until it is inspected by a licensed electrician. The utility will not turn on the power otherwise.

Town officials are very concerned about the massive amount of downed wires, especially primary wires to homes on the streets  where electricity was powered down earlier this week. We have multiple snapped poles and at least one blown transformer. It will take time to restore power in some areas as cable and telephone wires are also involved.

We ask for your patience and to get updates on the Town’s website, radio, and tweets in lieu of calling Town Offices where staff are still in emergency response. Today we are already experiencing multiple calls for smell of gas and medical assistance.

At the present time Central Avenue, Lighthouse, Rebecca, Turner, Oceanside and Glades are not passable and will not be for at least the next 24 hours. No vehicles are allowed in these areas.

The good news is that flooding has already receded; the challenge is that the over wash is much greater than usual and has impacted some areas more severely than in many years.

The Shelter will not be open this evening and is in the process of winding down and transporting residents safely back into their homes.

The DPW has been working tirelessly for the last 36 hours clearing snow. They are in debris removal mode and road clearing. Sidewalks and parking lots will be addressed once major arteries are clear and closed roads opened for emergency access. We are requesting if additional resources from the Commonwealth are possible. MEMA and the National Guard have been very helpful.

A determination will be made later today about school opening and town offices later this afternoon.

Again, thank you for your patience and cooperation. Please let public safety and town personnel perform their duties. We have again been fortunate that there have been no serious injuries or loss of life and we want to keep it that way.
