Scituate Emergency Management Team Update

High Wind Watch

We are under a high wind watch, forecast to experience a high wind event this afternoon into Friday evening coinciding with an arctic blast of extreme cold. We are forecast to receive steady north winds 35-40mph with gusts potentially exceeding 55mph. Peak winds are expected from 4pm to midnight.

The wind chill factor could bring the temperatures to -15 degrees overnight, exposure to these temperatures can be extremely dangerous so please try to stay indoors. The rain and snow line for this afternoon is forecast to be south of Scituate. If this precipitation line works north to our area as the extreme cold comes in it could create slick roads and sidewalks. Please be aware of this potential if you need to be out this evening.

If the wind gusts do exceed 50 mph we could potentially experience tree and limb damage which may cause scattered power outages. Please be aware of downed power lines. If you witness downed power lines stay clear and dial 911 and report any electrical or power issue to National Grid at 800-465-1212 or Eversource for Humarock residents at 800-286-2000.

The anticipated strong north winds should not create any flooding issues but we may experience some splash over on our north facing coastal roads from 8-11pm. Be aware of this ocean spray creating potential icing from Rebecca Road, Turner Road, Oceanside Drive and Edward Foster Road.

We will be opening our Senior Center as a warming center at 9 am Saturday morning in case anyone loses power. It will remain open into the afternoon, time will depend on the need.

A second weather event is forecast for Sunday evening into Monday. A coastal storm is expected to impact our area with strong E/SE winds and rain. It may start as snow turning to rain, any accumulating snow is forecast to stay west of us at this time. If the storm moves further east so will the snow/rain line.

We do not anticipate any significant coastal issues beyond splash over if the track stays as forecast. If anything changes with this storm forecast we will be sure to send an update on Sunday.

Stay safe and enjoy your weekend!
