Rain Barrels

The Scituate Water Resources Committee and Troop 7 are offering residents an opportunity to buy a rain barrel from the town and have it delivered and set up at their home. For only a $20 donation to Boy Scouts Troop 7 of Scituate, adults and boys from the Troop will bring it to you and install it on your downspout. The 60 gallon rain barrels sell for $55 and may be purchased online at http://www.scituatema.gov/

Once at the town website, look for the “Pay Bills” link to order your rain barrel by credit card or electronic check. This is a limited time offer, so act now! Each UV protected 60 gallon Great American Rain Barrel is a repurposed shipping drum made from 3/16" UV protected food grade polyethylene. The barrel stands 39" tall and is 24" in diameter. It has a wide mouth and solid screw-on lid that is perforated to receive water in the barrel. Each barrel comes with a plastic spigot threaded for hose attachment, two elbows for overflow and future linking and a mosquito skirt to prevent insects from breeding inside the barrel. To contact Troop 7, call; Dr. Nico Afanasenko at 781-545-6644.

Last summer, Scituate residents' water conservation efforts made a huge impact on our ability to make it through one of the worst droughts we can remember.  While we are not currently in a drought, we encourage all residents to start saving water now so we have plenty of supply to make it through the summer. This rain barrel program is an easy way to make a difference. The town’s irrigation bans have also been incredibly effective at protecting our water supply during times of high demand. Between May 1 and September 30 all outdoor watering must occur before 9 AM and after 5 PM. During this period automatic in-ground irrigation systems may be used one day per week, according to your voting precinct. Precinct 1 may irrigate on Monday, Precinct 2 may irrigate on Tuesday, Precinct 3 may irrigate on Wednesday, Precinct 4 may irrigate on Thursday, and Precincts 5 and 6 may irrigate on Friday.

Residents with new lawns being established for the first time may be allowed a temporary exemption by applying to the Water department. No new in-ground automatic irrigation systems may be connected to the town’s drinking water supply. Violation of these conservation measures may result in fines of up to $100 per day.
