A History of the Scituate Fire Department

This book is the history of firefighting in Scituate, MA from the “horse and buggy” days of the late 19th century through the establishment of the modern, professional fire department of today. It follows the evolution of the department’s fire houses through the creation of its early hose houses to the recently completed state-of-the-art Public Safety Complex. It describes the status of the department’s firefighting apparatus from the days of the horse pulled fire engines of the early 1900s to the modern high tech fire engines of today. The book also explains the changing nature of what it means to be a fire fighter today, especially the transition from primarily fighting structural fires to primarily responding to medical emergencies and rescues. The book also highlights some of the town’s major fires and its response to the increasing number of major storms, which the town has experienced in recent years.
