HOARDING

SCITUATE HOARDING RESPONSE TEAM

Hoarding Disorder is a mental health condition estimated to affect 2-5% of the adult population in the U.S.  Despite its prevalence, very few treatment options are available and accessible to those struggling with the condition.  People with symptoms of hoarding may come to the attention of municipal departments, especially police, fire and local boards of health. Investigating and resolving situations that involve hoarding can be complicated.  In an effort to work more collaboratively and effectively with these residents, the Town of Scituate formed the Scituate Hoarding Response Team in 2013.

The Scituate Hoarding Response Team is a multidisciplinary partnership of municipal officials and professionals who aim to achieve a comprehensive, informed response to hoarding and to enhance the availability of evidence-informed services and resources to the South Shore community.  Since the partnership began in 2013, the Scituate Hoarding Response Team has been the recipient of numerous grants, including the Mass Housing Lee Mannillo Memorial Grant and the CHNA 20 Behavioral Health Grant.  These funds have allowed our team to offer community education events, Buried in Treasures support groups, a Buried in Treasures Train the Trainer workshop, and online versions of Buried in Treasures groups and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Hoarding Disorder.  In addition to programming, we designed and launched a website and e-newsletter outreach to promote South Shore hoarding-related resources at www.SouthShoreCRC.org.

The Scituate Hoarding Response Team is an active member of the Statewide Steering Committee on Hoarding.  The link below will take you to a page that provides many other links, organizations, and resources that will help address hoarding.
