Storm Advisory #1 March 20, 2018

Nor'easter #4 of the 2018 Season

Scituate will be impacted by another Nor’easter starting Wednesday around noon. The major impacts from this storm will be snow, wind, and the potential for minor to moderate coastal flooding. We are forecast to receive 6-10” of heavy snow lasting into Thursday morning, the heaviest snow expected after 6 pm. Winds expected to be steady northeast 25-30 mph and gusts up to 50mph starting in the afternoon and staying strong through much of the night. Due to the heavy snow and high winds we are under a winter storm warning.

Similar to the last storm, the snow will be on the heavier side which may lead to scattered power outages. At this time the winds are not forecast to be quite as strong as the March 12th storm but be prepared for the potential of power loss. Make sure your generators are operational, you have sufficient fuel, and they are placed well away from any doors or windows with the exhaust facing away from your home. Please do not put generators in your basement; this will likely create a dangerous carbon monoxide issue throughout your home. Again make sure your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are working properly. Many batteries are likely low in voltage due to the long duration power outages this past month.

We will likely encounter minor to moderate coastal flooding due during high tide at 3:14 am. We have astronomically moderate high tides (10.7), with a 2-2.5’ storm surge predicted we should expect some flooding. This will likely be the only tide with moderate coastal impacts with splash over likely Thursday afternoon.

Travel tomorrow afternoon and evening will be extremely difficult, please only drive if you have to.  Be extremely careful if you shovel near the roadways, it will be very difficult for plow drivers to see you due to the restricted visibility.

We have consulted with National Grid and Eversource and have requested extra crews to be staged in Town. Please prepare to keep your family safe during this storm. The Town of Scituate Public Safety personnel are prepared and ready to keep our community safe. Thank you for your cooperation.
