On February 9, 2020 between 12am and 4pm, www.scituatema.gov experienced a problem with its SSL certificate, causing an error to be displayed when visiting the website. As soon as the town became aware of it, the website hosting vendor was notified and they quickly worked to resolve the problem.
SSL certificates are used to encrypt communication between a visitor’s web browser and the website.
During this period of time, all online payment services for stickers, real estate, excise, water and sewer bills, continued to be encrypted by the town’s payment processing vendor. At no point was any sensitive payment information at risk, nor was there any interruption in any payments made.
