Coastal Awareness

Good afternoon,

Many have already experienced the heavy rain this afternoon creating street flooding in various areas around Town. A second round of heavy rain is anticipated to arrive by 5pm exiting the coast after 10pm.

We also anticipate some minor coastal flooding, especially in our typical low-lying areas over the next five days due to the full moon creating astronomical high tides. The Cole Parkway and Mill Wharf parking lots are expected to flood during the night time high tides. Be cautious of parking overnight in these locations.

Please be aware of these high tides starting tonight (Tuesday) at 9-11pm, moving ahead approximately an hour each night, through early Sunday morning at 1-3am.  If you are planning to be on the water please understand these astronomical tides also bring swifter currents and rip tides, especially in the North and South Rivers.

Tropical Storm Claudette will pass east of New England overnight leaving some large ground swells behind by tomorrow morning that may create 4’-8’ waves as they enter the shallow coastal waters. These large waves will also increase the likelihood of rip currents. Remember if you get caught in a rip current to swim parallel to the beach to escape the current pulling away from the beach.

Be well and Stay safe!
