Duties & Responsibilities

The Town of Scituate is governed by a Board of Selectmen made up of five members.

The Selectmen are the policy making Board for the Town and also its Executive Branch of Town Government.

The Selectmen are the licensing authorities and license the following:

  • Alcoholic Beverages
  • Automobile Licenses - Class I, II, III
  • Bowling
  • Common Victuallers
  • Disposal of Septage Waste
  • Electronic Games
  • Entertainment
  • Hawker Peddlers
  • Ice Cream Truck
  • Innkeepers
  • Bed & Breakfast
  • Movie Theater
  • Taxi

The Selectmen appoint:

  • Town Administrator
  • Town Counsel
  • Town Accountant
  • Treasurer/Collector
  • Agent of Veteran's Benefits

Citizen Boards, Committees, Commissions and Councils, such as:

  • Animal Control Board
  • Beautification Commission
  • By-Law Review Commission
  • Cable Television Committee
  • Commission on Disabilities
  • Conservation Commission
  • Council on Aging
  • Board of Health
  • Public Building Commission
  • Recreation Commission
  • Traffic Rules and Regulations Committee
  • Waterways Commission
  • Zoning Board of Appeals

The Annual Appointment process for the aforementioned Committees begins in June and citizens are urged to come by the Selectmen’s office and fill out an application.
