EEE Update

The Massachusetts Department of Public Health considers Scituate to be in the “low risk” zone for contracting the EEE Virus.

DPH updates the risk level for communities on a daily basis. Scituate did have a positive mosquito pool of EEE. The species of mosquito was Culiseta Melanura which is a bird biting mosquito. Residents should take precautions to protect themselves from mosquito bites by staying indoors as much as possible from dusk to dawn during peak mosquito hours, applying insect repellent when outdoors, draining standing water where mosquitos breed, and repairing screens and doors.

August and September are the peak months for mosquito borne illnesses. The risk will decrease the first hard frost. Residents that would like to request spraying at their homes can call Plymouth County Mosquito Control at 781-585-5450.
