Scituate Residents: The Scituate/Sucy-en-Brie Sister City Committee needs your help

World War I Scituate Vets

Residents of Scituate, we need your help!

Did you have a family member who served in World War I? If so, the Scituate Sister City Committee needs your help. As France begins this year to commemorate with other European nations the events of World War I, the Jumelage (Sister City) Committee of Sucy-en-Brie is seeking information about the contribution of Scituate’s men and women to America’s armed forces in the “Great War” from April 6, 1917 to November 11, 1918.

Thanks to the bronze plaque unveiled during a stirring welcome home ceremony at Dreamwold and at Lawson Common on July 4, 1921, as well as to a later plaque, the Committee has the names of 191 men and women from Scituate who participated in that war. Now it is slowly gathering information about the details of their service and family background. The committee intends to create, along with students of Scituate High School, a multimedia presentation to be shared with our town as well as with Sucy-en-Brie. It hopes to determine the nature and location of service as well as to find personal stories, letters, pictures, and other memorabilia still held by the descendants of these brave veterans. Their names will be published on the Scituate/Sucy-en-Brie Sister City Committee page.

Anyone having information to share with us about names on this list is encouraged to contact the committee through the Facebook Page or to send information to Scituate/Sucy-en-Brie Committee, c/o Native, 51 Front Street, Scituate, 02066. In addition, the Committee also welcomes stories of relatives or friends of present Scituate residents even if the veteran did not live in Scituate at the time of service.
