TOWN OF SCITUATE – DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC WORKS

SNOW REMOVAL POLICY

 

  1. Residents are advised to keep their cars off all streets to avoid damage to the vehicle and to expedite plowing and sanding operations. Vehicles obstructing plow or sanding operations will be fined for each offense (Town Bylaw, section 30150 Art. E).

 

  1. No person shall deposit in or upon any public street or public place, any water, snow or substance, which freeze or otherwise create a hazardous condition  (Town Bylaw, section 30150 Art. D).

 

  1. The Town is NOT liable for the damage to LAWNS, FENCES, STEPS, SHRUBS, TREES, AND MAIL BOXES AND OTHER PRIVATE PROPERTY within the street layout as a result of snow removal activities. Residents are urged to drive stakes with reflectors along the edge of their property.

 

  1. Contractors, plowing or sanding for the town are not allowed to plow / sand private property while on duty with the Town.

 

  1. Private Plowing- The Town of Scituate prohibits private plow contractors from pushing snow from driveways or parking lots onto Town Streets. This practice is dangerous and impedes the Towns snow removal efforts if there is no other alternatative to pushing snow into the street, the (private) plow driver must plow off the windrow left across the street by re-plowing until the road is safe.

 

  1. To report unplowed streets during a snowstorm, call the Highway Department directly at 781-545-8734.

 

  1. Residents ONLY may obtain small amounts of sand for emergency use at the Highway Garage (68 Captain Pierce Road) at no charge.

 

  1. The Town will NOT plow or sand uncompleted subdivisions, developments or subdivisions, developments that pay common fees for snow removal, these areas will be sanded upon request from Police and Fire Departments for safety reasons only.

 

  1. The DPW and Fire Department request the cooperation of homeowners in clearing snow and ice from around fire hydrants in front of their property.

 

  1. The DPW Highway Department also request homeowners to remove (from roadway) any kids toys such as basketball hoops, hockey nets or other items that may obstruct snowplowing operations.
